One of the most popular off-road SUVs worldwide is the 4Runner. New model year will bring new generation. 2016 Toyota 4Runner will be fully redesigned and will mark the new era in life of this SUV. Although there is no much information about the upcoming 4Runner, some sources indicated changes that we can expect from the upcoming model. Besides design alterations, new 2016 Toyota 4Runner is expected to get boosts in performance department.

Since new model year brings a new generation, sixth, Toyota will definitely make some important changes on the exterior of the 4Runner. We can expect same platform as before, since its body-on-frame architecture provides more versatility for this SUV. However, changes will be made mainly in materials, which will be lighter, in order to reduce overall weight of the vehicle.

Rumors state that Toyota may introduce diesel engine for new 4Runner. Other option that could find its place under the hood of this SUV is a stronger V8 engine.

Current 4Runner has fuel economy estimated at 18/19 mpg in combined ride (depending on drivetrain), while new model year should bring improvements in this segment. Upcoming 2016 Toyota 4Runner will be lighter, its transmission is expected to get more speeds (5-speed manual is current) as well some fuel saving technologies are all important factor which will contribute to better mileage. If the model comes packed with diesel engine, mpg rates will be among the best in class.

Top competitors of the 2016 Toyota 4Runner are Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango and Toyota Highlander. However the closest of them all is Jeep’s Grand Cherokee, which has quite similar shape and purpose. Although both Highlander and Durango have great off-road performances, these models will easily be outrun by the 4Runner in this segment.

Although the prices of the model are not released yet, there are no indications that new 4Runner will be much pricier than the current one. Its estimated price tag is around $34,000. Released ate, on the other hand, is not expected before late this year. Most probably Japanese automaker will wait until last couple of months to reveal the new look and performance of the 2016 4Runner.
