2016 Subaru WRX Release date, specs, price

Just a year ago, Subaru presented its redesigned WRX. The model drops the Impreza name for all markets, and comes with numerous alterations. This time, 2016 Subaru WRX come practical unchanged. Small upgrades and subtle revisions will be related mainly to its features, while overall body and design stay the same. However the rumors about the 2016 Subaru WRX hatchback arrival are not going to happen for this model year. According to reliable sources we can expect the hatch version as of 2018 model year, but not before that. However Subaru officials didn’t confirm or denied any claims, so we will have to wait for the official release in order to be sure what will, and what will not happen. In the meantime here are the expected specs of the 2016 Subaru WRX:

Exterior of the 2016 Subaru WRX will be unchanged. Its body shape and styling elements will be carried over, while the one new thing that could be included for this model year is new paint choices. Both regular WRX and WRX STi versions will be available, with completely three trim levels available for each.

Base equipment which will be available on WRX model includes 17-inch alloy wheels, auto climate control, steering wheel and shift knob covered in leather, sound system with 6 speakers, CD player, HD radio and a USB/iPod interface, 4.3-inch display, Bluetooth connection and various other comfort features including adjustable seats and similar conveniences.  Backup camera and cruise control are also part of standards. New model year could bring LED headlights and foglights as part of standard equipment, but we will have to wait and see.

Base trim for the WRX STi has few additional features, mainly related to driving capabilities, such as Brembo brakes, more tuned suspension, limited-slip differentials and few other tweaks. LED headlights, foglights and bigger wheels (18-inch) are also part of upgrades compared with regular WRX.

The engines depend on versions, but both are packed with all-wheel drive as only option. For 2016 model year 2016 Subaru WRX will be packed with a turbocharged 2.0-liter, horizontally opposed 4-cylinder Boxer engine under its hood. Its ouptu is rarted at 268 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. It can be packed with a 6-speed manual transmission (standard) or a CVT with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters (optional).

The 2016 Subaru WRX STi uses stronger powertrain, since its it a sportier version of the two. It comes packed with a turbocharged 2.5-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder Boxer engine. This unit is capable to crank out 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. For this model, CVT is not available, but only a 6-speed manual.

Fuel economy for regular WRX depends on transmission. It is rated at 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway (manual) or 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway (CVT). WRX STi returns 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway.

Crowded segment in which WRX competes in gives it some tough opponents. Two of them come from German automaker Volkswagen and include its Golf R and GTI models. Ford’s Focus ST and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution are other alternatives for people who love this type of vehicles.

The expected release date is somewhere around the fall this year, 2015. Precise date is still unavailable. Pricing is expected to be quite similar to previous models. This means we can expect the 2016 WRX to start slightly under $27,000 and WRX STi under $35,000.
