2016 Mazda CX-9 changes and news

Pretty extensive changes that are yet to some, caused 2016 CX-9 version to come out practically the same as previous. On the other hand, Mazda officials could also decide to skip a year, and to launch new generation for 2016 model year, with a small delay. There is no reliable info about this news, so we will have to wait and see. If Mazda’s engineers and designers finish their work before the deadline, we can easily see redesigned CX-9 with a 2016MY badge.

2016 Mazda CX-9 will be available in three trims levels, offered with different equipment. Sport, Touring and Grand Touring are the CX-9’s trims. List of standard features is extensive, so new generation, whether it carries the 2016 or 2017 MY badge, will not have much to add. In fact, we expect the majority of changes to be referred to interior design as well as quality materials. We can also expect more practical solutions, having in mind that all leading manufacturers pay much more attention to easy usage of its features. Regarding technology, we will see all the latest from Mazda, including offered optional available even for base trim.

2016 Mazda CX-9 engine options

If the new generation starts from 2017 model year, that under the hood of this model, we can expect a 3.7-liter DOHC engine with 273 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. It comes mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD) – standard, while Active Torque Split All-wheel drive (AWD) is available as optional.

Drive systems should remain the same even after the redesign. However the power unit will be replaced. Standard engine will be a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Skyactiv with 167 hp and 168 lb-ft of torque, while the transmission should remain unchanged.

The engine change should be reflected in fuel economy of the 2016 Mazda CX-9. European and some other markets could count on diesel engine too, while hybrid variant is unlikely, according to the words of Mazda’s global marketing boss Masahiro Moro.

2016 Mazda CX-9 price and release

Price should remain in the same range as before, mainly because of competitive segment in which 2016 Mazda CX-9 competes in. Mazda officials discussed this issue when they talked about the engine swap, so they replaced six-cylinder for four-cylinder, when they talked about engine replacement for V6. New model should be released on sale early on 2016, but we still can’t confirm whether it will be launched as a 2016 or 2017 model.
