2016 Dodge Dakota

After discontinuation of this mid-size pickup truck, looks like 2016 Dodge Dakota will be revealed after five years of retirement.  New model year, and, reasonable all-new look and start of fresh, fourth generation of this pickup will bring massive changes.

2016 Dodge Dakota changes

Dodge Dakota originally started its production back in 1987, and it filled the gap between large and compact pickups. As a pioneer in this segment, it made a big success, and reached peak of its production and sales in 2000. Dodge decided to end the production of Dakota, when its sales result was not satisfying, to say at least. Parameters for its downward spiral are sales numbers which went from 177,395 sold units in 2000, to 12,156 in 2011. Dakota was the only model that suffered low demand, in fact “same price as full-size pickup” was the customer’s complain and it ultimately lead to low sales rate for mid-sizers.

Now, it looks like the situation is changing. At this year Detroit Auto Show, Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler Group, announced possibility of re-producing the Dakota, but with massive alterations, from concept and platform to design and performance. 2016 Dodge Dakota should be built on a unibody platform, which will make a difference in both Dakota’s weight and overall maneuverability.  Its appearance will resemble more to Honda Ridgeline, than the “old” Dakota. If that happens, 2016 Dodge Dakota styling cues would be taken mostly from the Rampage Concept.

Platform change will definitely lead to better fuel consumption, and overall performance, but when it comes to 2016 Dodge Dakota, its producers have some other plans, too. The engine specs are not discussed, but we believe it will continue with same engines: optional 4.7-liter V8 and standard 3.7-liter V6. However, changes are expected regarding transmissions. 2016 Dodge Dakota could also be packed with diesel engines for US market, which would be first. The possibility of diesel engine came also from Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler Group.

Fuel economy will be upgraded for sure, due to several alterations made in order to achieve best possible efficiency, including platform change, and usage of light weighted materials.

2016 Dodge Dakota competition

2016 Dodge Dakota will probably have slightly different competitors than its previous versions, mainly due to extensive changes made for this model year. We mentioned earlier that its closest rival will be Honda Ridgeline, and beside it, new, 2016 Dakota could also face Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier.

2016 Dodge Dakota price and release

Exact release date is still unknown, mainly due to the fact that Dodge hasn’t firmly confirmed whether Dakota will be released as 2016 or 2017 model. Regardless of these facts, we can’t expect Dakota’s release before middle 2015, at least. Price will be modified but competitive, and we believe that its starting price will stay in range from $25 000 to $30 000, but will go much higher with its long trim line-up.
