2016 BMW X1 changes and expectation

Change of platform for 2016 BMW X1 and transition to the front-driving UKL platform, resulted in dimensions change. As it was confirmed from BMW’s officials, new 2016 X1 will be smaller than its predecessor. In fact, full dimensions specs are already available online. New X1 will share its underpinning with both 2-series Active Tourer MPV and MINI Countryman and Clubman. The lost of few inches in height, width and length, is not the only loss it suffered. The 2016 version of BMW X1 will also be lighter than before.

These info were confirmed by BMW officials, who said that “The next X1 will be slightly smaller externally but offer similar interior space as the first generation model. The decision to base it on a new platform structure shared with the 2-series Active Tourer will also make it lighter than the model it replaces.”

However, beside this, famous Bavarian manufacturer didn’t reveal much. We know that 2016 BMW X1 will lose 6.5 inches overall, 3.5 in length, 1.2 in width and 1.8 in height. Design alterations will include few changes on the front end, which will include new headlights and new grill design, among other changes which will be made in order to improve aerodynamics and looks of the vehicle. However the real volume of design changes will not be known until the big reveal.

2016 BMW X1 engine and fuel mileage

Like we indicated earlier, 2016 BMW X1 will not have the same power units as its predecessor. Its previous I6 powertrain will be replaced with engines with smaller displacement. Under the hood of X1 for 2016 model year will, probably, be placed a 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine with 136 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. Other engine possibility is a 2.0-liter turbo I4 that makes 231 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. However it remains unclear whether the diesel version of a 2.0-liter unit will be available for US market, but it will, most likely be available for European customers. Two transmission choices are mentioned: 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic. 2016 BMW X1 will be available with four-wheel drive, but front-wheel drive option is not definite.

Fuel economy will benefit from all alterations made on 2016 BMW X1, but there are no exact ratings available yet. As soon as BMW or EPA release the ratings, we will inform you, so stay tuned.
