2016 BMW 7-Series Release date

Big changes are happening in the German’s BMW engineering team. Looks like this automaker plans to take the market by storm with latest innovative solutions which will be implemented into its upcoming models, including 2016 BMW 7-Series. Current, fifth generation of the 7-Series started back in 2008, and it is aging gracefully. However, the market is becoming flooded with models from other great producers, filled with latest design and performance solutions, making the 7-Series uncompetitive. This will change rapidly, since the 2016 model will bring massive change, and put the model back where it belongs, in top 5 vehicles on the market.

2016 BMW 7-Series changes

2016 BMW 7-Series will come completely overhauled, with changes made on its design, performance and architecture. BMW recently developed new rear-wheel-drive platform called 35up, and it will underpin majority of its newest editions. The platform is lightweight scalable which will help in reducing weight. Heavy body construction, currently made completely out of steel, will be replaced with aluminum and carbon fiber parts. According to various reports, new 7-Series hood, trunk lids and roof will be made of carbon fiber. These changes will make significant difference in current and upcoming 7-Series weight, around 600 lbs, resulting in several other improvements.

Design of the 2016 BMW 7-Series will have some similarities with Vision Future Luxury Concept which was showcased at 2014 Beijing auto show. BMW 7-Series Coupe will not be launched, despite some rumors claiming opposite. However the M version will be available. Exterior design changes will include significant revisions on the front end of the vehicle, as well as on the rear. This is not all, since BMW designed slightly altered the body lines, making the new 7-0Series more muscular than before.

Interior also goes through major makeover. The most distinguish design changes is the center-positioned big screen that sits on top of the dash. Latest technology upgrades will also be incorporated including BMW’s infotainment system. Materials inside the cabin will be top quality, including mainly leather with wood and metallic touches.

2016 BMW 7-Series engine specs

Under the hood BMW will make some changes as well. The standard engine line-up will be amended probably with 4-cylinder unit in order to provide better fuel economy. However, precise engine is not mentioned, so we will have to wait until the official release.

Both diesel and petrol versions of a 3.0-liter inline-6 will be available, but it stays unclear whether BMW will include diesel unit into the offer for US market. Stronger 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 as well as a 6.0-liter turbocharged V12 will stay available for 2016 BMW 7-Series as well.

Plug-in Hybrid version will be offered, and BMW confirmed this news. However, opinions about transmissions are divided. Some sources say that current 8-speed automatic transmission will stay, and be replaced with a gearbox with more speeds while others say that the change will happen immediately.

Innovative drive assist solutions will be part of the redesigned 7-Series, including self-parking and distance-control cruise control.
